We leave from Puerto Natales in private transfer to the
Paredes family farm in the Cerro Dorotea area (approximately
10 minutes). Here, the guide and local baqueanos pass
out the horses according to size and horseback riding
experience. Then they give a brief security and information
talk and help the passengers achieve proper riding position
and comfort.
From here, we begin to climb Cerro Dorotea, which is about
800 meters high. We reach the summit in approximately
1½ hours, where we take a break to enjoy breathtaking
views of Puerto Natales, Última Esperanza Fjord,
Montt Gulf, the Dumestre Sector and much of the Argentine
Patagonian steppe.
The guide relates some of the history of the region, introducing
us to the early pioneers and explorers who colonized these
lands, while we enjoy a small snack. If the baqueanos
have their mate gourd and tea in the saddle, they will
likely invite us to drink the typical mate tea of the
region around a small fire.
At the top of the hill, we can also appreciate the majestic
condor, which nests in the vertical walls of Cerro Dorotea.
A condor nearly always flies right above us to ensure
that we are not potential food. These flights are perfect,
thanks to the wind, which hits the vertical walls of the
hill and allows the condors to achieve an ideal support
to be able to get within only a few meters of the horses.
After enjoying the summit, we continue along the edge
of the hill, with a direct view of Puerto Natales, and
we begin our descent back to the Paredes family home.
They will be waiting for us with a classic regional tea-time
meal, known as once, with hot coffee or tea and typical
buns with jam and butter. After our tea, we return by
private transfer to Puerto Natales.
